Beautiful. Damn hard. Increasingly useful.
"As far as I've heard, the fight's still on"
rosefox: A bearded man in a yarmulke shouting L'CHAIM! (Judaism)
A couple of years ago I realized you could sing "Mi Chamocha" to the tune of "The Wellerman". I mentioned this to a friend tonight, and this resulted. Chag Pesach sameach!

There once was a tribe whose tale I'll tell
The name of the tribe was Israel
Their exodus story you know well
Oh blow, my desert wind, blow

Soon may deliverance come
And carry us far from Egypt's sun
One day when the plagues are done
We'll take our dough and go

We'd been enslaved for years galore
When a son a Hebrew woman bore
To save his life, his mother swore
She'd have to let him go

The baby basket hit the water
Found its way to Pharaoh's daughter
She raised him to do what he oughta—
Little did she know

When Moses struck an overseer
He felt a sudden rush of fear
The burning bush spoke in his ear
And sent him to Pharaoh

At Aaron's side, he took a stand
With halting words and shaking hands
In Pharaoh's face, he did demand:
LET MY PEOPLE GO

But Pharaoh's heart was hard as stone
We knew we'd have to flee our home
Across the sea to lands unknown
A path that God would show

The plagues brought darkness, death, and more
The people shook and prayed and swore
A splash of blood upon the door
Protected those below

We borrowed gold and packed supplies
We hushed our frightened children's cries
There was no time for bread to rise
And so we eat matzo

A miracle met us at the sea
And parted it so we could flee
But even in our joy, we grieve
Those lost to the water's flow

Miriam gathered up the throng
And raised her beautiful voice in song
We were glad to sing along
With words that we still know:

Mi chamocha
ba'eilim, Adonai?
Mi chamocha
Nedar bakodesh?

It would have been enough, we say
To merely have that glorious day
But up ahead, Mount Sinai lay
With Torah to bestow

Today we're free, but still recall
What it was like to be in thrall
We tell the tale, renew the call
To let ALL people go!

Soon may deliverance come
And free all people beneath the sun
We'll fight till justice is done
And ALL are free to go!

That is awesome.

(Six13 did a Wellerman thing a few years ago, though theirs wound up being more of a medley...)

Happy passover!

I realized belatedly I should put it behind a cut tag with an earworm warning. It's going to be in my head for weeks...

Two of us have recorded the first chorus. I'd like to put it on youtube to share.
Author credit(s)?
May I set it as public or should I keep it unlisted (which means that anyone who has the link can watch it, but it won't show up in searches)?

Oh wow, I'm honored! Please credit to 'rosefox' and link back to this post. Setting it as public is fine.

To link directly to your page in the description would require that I verify my account in specific ways that I'm not really happy about. I've put searchable information in the description, which one can see by clicking on the ...) I also can't edit the autocaptions (it has son for sun and plates for plagues). I'm not skilled at this.

I want to sing this at my community seder tonight - but I think that it's been programmed so it ends at a *very* specific time, so maybe I'll keep this for after services tomorrow, where we'll all have lunch (mmm, seder leftovers!) and hanging out. This is fantastic! Thank you for it!

....maybe 'm missing something but how does the mi chamocha verse scan? just stretch the syllables out?
8 April 2023 16:43
rosefox: Green books on library shelves. (Default)
It scans to the chorus with only a little elongation.
